Can Non-Profits Advocate For or Against California Propositions?

There is a lot of buzz lately in the local community about whether or not local non-profit organizations ("NPOs") can advocate for or against propositions.

The IRS states that generally “no organization may qualify for section 501(c)(3) status if a substantial part of its activities is attempting to influence legislation (commonly known as lobbying). A 501(c)(3) organization may engage in some lobbying, but too much lobbying activity risks loss of tax exempt status.”

These 501(c)(3) organizations, like Sierra Business Council and the Church of Latter Day Saints, walk a fine line when supporting and opposing propositions and should do so only after consulting legal counsel in order to protect against the revocation of their tax-free status.

Hetty's Haven

The Rotary Club of Nevada County South spent most of the day doing yard work and painting at Hetty's Haven. Hetty's Haven is a shelter for abused women and their children. The shelter is run by Women of Worth. There was a lot of work to do, and we had a blast doing it! The shelter will open on July 31st and is already scheduled to be full.

I was moving some furniture into the garage, and I saw a wood cut out shaped like a child about the same age as our younger daughter. It was painted black and had a laminated placard on it. The placard stated that the cut out represented Ellen Miller. Ellen was eight years old. She was hit in the head with a mug thrown by her father. Ellen died as a result of her injuries.

Domestic abuse is very serious and affects our littlest treasures the most. Please go to the Hetty's Haven website and check it out. The non-profit is in need of cash donations...right now some appliances. The shelter is run almost entirely by private donations - such donations should be tax deductible. Helping this non-profit is one of the great kind of things that you can do to make our county even more wonderful. Thank you to Women of Worth for allowing me (and the rest of my Rotary Club) to spend my Saturday with you and to support your wonderful efforts!

Exit question: Will Allison Swartzendruber ever stop painting?
