Rotarians at Work Day - Nevada County Fairgrounds

On April 10, 2012, the Nevada County Board of Supervisors proclaimed today Rotarians at Work Day in Nevada County. Today, around two hundred Rotarians, boys and girls scouts, Interact students, and FFA and 4H students descended upon the "jewel of Nevada County" in order to "improve and beautify one of the county's best assets."

Here are some pictures from Nevada County South's project - repainting the administration building (thanks to Marcel Verdooner for the photos and thanks to Jim Moule for the paint)!

John Hart from The Union took a ton of pictures too.  His pictures are here.

Resolution of the Board Of Supervisors of the County Of NEVADA, State of California, Proclaiming APRIL 14, 2012, As ROTARIANS AT WORK Day In NEVADA County and Commending AREA Rotary for Their Ongoing Public ServICE

Whereas, in 1911, Rotarians enthusiastically adopted the motto “Service Above Self” because it so aptly articulated the ideals that the fledgling organization was in the process of developing and every Rotarian in the world has the opportunity to renew their commitment to this timeless message of compassion and generosity of spirit by participating in Rotarians At Work Day.

WHEREAS, Rotary brings a 105-year history of providing humanitarian service, encouraging high ethical standards, and helping build goodwill and peace in the world, through our local Rotary Clubs which are part of Rotary International and include more than 1.2 million Rotarians in 34,000 clubs in 200 nations and who initiate service projects to address today’s challenges.  In western Nevada County there are five area Rotary Clubs:  Nevada County South, Grass Valley, 49er Breakfast, Nevada City and Penn Valley, representing 300 business and professional people.

Whereas, the Nevada County Fairgrounds in Grass Valley, California, is home to the Nevada County Fair, the Draft Horse Classic, and the Country Christmas Faire. Located under tall pine trees, the fairgrounds are commonly referred to as “California’s Most Beautiful Fairgrounds.”

Whereas, the Nevada County Fair is an economic engine generating tangible benefits beyond the educational, cultural, and agricultural tradition including approximately $20,813,000 in spending activity alone in 2009 – benefiting the local economy and creating a ripple effect of economic benefit for the state.

WHEREAS, now the Nevada County Fairgrounds faces a total loss of funding from the State of California under the proposed budget which results in a reduction of about $250,000 to the Nevada County Fairgrounds annually, but the Nevada County Fairgrounds facing dramatic cuts in funding from the State of California provides an opportunity for Rotarians to step in and make a difference.

WHEREAS, the five area Rotary Clubs of western Nevada County organized nine work projects at the Nevada County Fairgrounds which are expect to beautify the fairgrounds and alleviate the financial stress caused by these difficult financial times.  The nine projects will be accomplished with the help of some 200 volunteer Rotarians and youngsters from 4H, FFA, Boy and Girl Scouts, and Rotary Youth Service Clubs.  It will be the largest effort ever organized by local Rotary Clubs to improve and beautify one of the county's best assets.

WHEREAS, Rotary International declared Saturday, April 14, 2012, as Rotarians at Work Day in Nevada County.  In its eighth year, Rotarians, both locally and throughout the world, will be working on improving our communities.

Now, Therefore, Be It Resolved, the Nevada County Board of Supervisors does declare Saturday, April 14, 2012, as Rotary Work Day in Nevada County and congratulates and commends the Rotary International, and specifically the five area Rotary Clubs:  Nevada County South, Grass Valley, 49er Breakfast, Nevada City and Penn Valley, for their efforts stated hereinabove and for their ongoing local and international public service.

Thank you to all of the local area volunteers for your tireless work today (and everyday) on behalf of our wonderful community!

Rotary Foundation Dinner

On November 15, 2011, the Miner's Foundry in Nevada City hosted the District 5190 - Area 4 - Rotary Foundation Dinner. The dinner was organized by Stephanie Ortiz and was virtually flawless. She did an amazing job!

With attendance a little over 200, the turnout was amazing and the contingent from Nevada County South was extraordinary. I am very proud to be a member of such a fantastic and enthusiastic group and humbled to be the president this year!

The guest speaker was Deepa Willingham (pictured to the left in the middle of the first row with some of the newest Paul Harris Fellows). Over the past eight years, a great deal of Deepa’s time and personal resources have been dedicated to the founding and developing of the Piyali Learning Center (PLC) outside of Calcutta, and spreading the message of the value of girls’ education throughout the world. Her dedicated work at PLC, which she developed through her non-profit organization PACE Universal and in conjunction with the Rotary Club of Calcutta Metropolitan, resulting in the creation of a sustainable village rehabilitation model was recognized by the Trustees of Rotary International with a $330,000 3-H Grant in May of 2009. This grant, which is being co-sponsored by 7 clubs in District 5240, will completely rehabilitate the village of Piyali Junction by bringing literacy (to children and adults), health and dental care, clean water, sanitation, vocational training, banking/micro-lending to help the change the face of poverty in that corner of the world. PACE Universal will serve as the cooperative organization for this grant.

Deepa is certainly a model for all of us to emulate!

The mission of The Rotary Foundation is to enable Rotarians to advance world understanding, goodwill, and peace through the improvement of health, the support of education, and the alleviation of poverty. Supporting The Rotary Foundation is one of the four pillars of an effective club in the Club Leadership Plan.  Rotary of Nevada County South (along with Penn Valley) was awarded the Every Rotarian Every Year Award and the 100% Sustaining Membership Award for its annual contributions to the Rotary Foundation!

I was proud to be selected to deliver Rotary's Four Way test at the end of the meeting (pictured to the right).

Being the president of the Rotary Club of Nevada County South this year has been one of the most fulfilling things that I have ever done.  It is the best international public service organization, and Nevada County South, in particular, is filled with the most wonderful, kind, and generous people that I know.

Thank you to all of my fellow Rotarians for being the wonderful people that you are.  You change our local community for the better through Rotary and through all of the other public services that you serve!

Rotary Nevada County South - Senior Wood Project

Members of Rotary Nevada County South split eight cords of wood in three hours for the Senior Wood Project!

Mike Fondiller runs the Senior Wood Program. The demands of the Senior Wood Project continue to grow as hard economic times affect many families in Nevada County.

The program is staffed by 12 volunteers who collect wood donated by local residents and businesses, split it and season it, and deliver the firewood at no cost to needy families in the foothill communities of Grass Valley, Penn Valley, and Nevada City. High maintenance cost of existing equipment and higher demand for wood fuel created the need for the equipment acquisition.

It was a ton of fun...but my back is a little sore!

Hetty's Haven

The Rotary Club of Nevada County South spent most of the day doing yard work and painting at Hetty's Haven. Hetty's Haven is a shelter for abused women and their children. The shelter is run by Women of Worth. There was a lot of work to do, and we had a blast doing it! The shelter will open on July 31st and is already scheduled to be full.

I was moving some furniture into the garage, and I saw a wood cut out shaped like a child about the same age as our younger daughter. It was painted black and had a laminated placard on it. The placard stated that the cut out represented Ellen Miller. Ellen was eight years old. She was hit in the head with a mug thrown by her father. Ellen died as a result of her injuries.

Domestic abuse is very serious and affects our littlest treasures the most. Please go to the Hetty's Haven website and check it out. The non-profit is in need of cash donations...right now some appliances. The shelter is run almost entirely by private donations - such donations should be tax deductible. Helping this non-profit is one of the great kind of things that you can do to make our county even more wonderful. Thank you to Women of Worth for allowing me (and the rest of my Rotary Club) to spend my Saturday with you and to support your wonderful efforts!

Exit question: Will Allison Swartzendruber ever stop painting?
